New Year New Hue – Pantone’s Lively New Shade for 2019

It’s the most wonderful time of the year for color lovers like the team at ChappellRoberts. Since 2000, the Pantone Color Institute has used this time to make its annual pick for the Color of the Year. Last year it was “Ultra Violet”, picked for its tendency to “evoke a counterculture flair, a grab for originality, ingenuity and visionary thinking.”

For 2019, the color experts chose to go a more natural route (quite literally) and chose “Living Coral”. Not to be biased or anything, but as a Florida-based creative agency, we couldn’t be more on board with this decision. Fun fact, Florida is the only state in the continental U.S. with shallow coral reef formations near the coast. Living Coral, officially PANTONE 16-1546, is described by Pantone as “symbolizing our innate need for optimism and joyful pursuits” that furthermore “embodies our desire for playful expression”. Now if that doesn’t sound like the embodiment of the Florida coastal spirit, we don’t know what does.

But how does one determine the 2019 Color of the Year before we’ve even finished up 2018? The Pantone Color Institute clarifies that this is more of a trend observation going into the new year, rather than an outright forecast. Though we can’t help but think that with the creative world following Pantone so closely, simply naming a color creates the trend itself. How’s that for a brain twister?

Besides being a trend observation, Living Coral can also be seen as the color that we need in our lives right now more than ever. By choosing a hue inspired by the delicate and tranquil nature of coral reefs, contrasts to our hectic digital life immediately come to mind. A little bit of calm and optimism could be just what the doctor ordered.

So, here’s to a more authentic 2019, where we put our phones down and look for idyllic inspiration in nature. And of course, paint that amazing “Living Coral” statement wall in our homes.
