I recently came across an interesting interview with Adam Pretty, Chief Photographer with Getty Images. He discusses the challenges of creating memorable photography and just how much effort it takes to create imagery that rises above the visual clutter of our modern day world. I saw a few shots I recognized from the past Olympics. The shot of American Rulon Gardener leaving his wrestling shoes in the center of the mat after his final match at the 2004 Athens Olympics as a gesture of retirement still stirs strong emotions.
I found it interesting that of all the compositional issues he deals with in a shot, the actual subject is the last consideration. And that risk is good. We’ve all heard the saying, “with risk comes reward.” Adam’s incredible photography is testament to that premise.
