How a ChappellRoberts Art Director Painted Her Way Into the Office of Every Tampa Bay Executive

The Tampa Bay business community is getting a special holiday gift this year. The cover of Tampa Bay Business Journal’s 2017 Book of Lists is an incredible piece of original artwork by our very own – Marie Holdaway.

Marie’s custom design was selected from among 100 submissions. TBBJ chooses its Book of Lists cover internally by a staff vote.

“I love knowing that the business people across Tampa Bay will have this crazy piece of artwork on their desk for all of 2017,” Marie told me after she found out her work had been selected. “I used watercolor because it has a certain whimsy to it that would be unexpected for a business publication.”

Marie’s design marries traditional art techniques with cutting edge digital technology. The final piece is the result of between 20 and 30 watercolor paintings cut and assembled into a final design.

Marie had a vision of her work standing out in the same way that Tampa Bay stands out, so she specifically avoided traditional business iconography clichés like skylines and briefcases. Details like Florida wildlife and native flora help make it a cover concept that could not work in any other market, again reinforcing the idea that what we have here in Tampa Bay is special and unique.
