Break Out of Your Creative Block

Today is the day you’ve been waiting for. You’re given a brief with complete creative control to develop something clever, fresh and knock-your-socks-off-worthy. This is the day that any employee in advertising dreams about out.

You dissect the brief, wrap your head around the client’s requirements, and begin cooking up brilliant, ingenious ideas. Your fine point pen almost touches the clean, crisp page of your sketch pad, just waiting to be defaced with your mind-blowing “eureka!” concepts. Instead, you stare at the blank page with your pen hovering mindlessly, and envision a tumble weed slowly blowing by in your head – you got nothing.

I don’t think I’m alone when it comes to a creative block, and I don’t think “creative block” is something that happens to just creatives. Think about it: don’t we all have days where you really don’t want to do anything? So what is it that makes us work harder and smarter, to exercise, to apply ourselves when the couch, a tub of ice cream and PJ’s sound more inviting? I believe there are two things that help keep us going: motivation and inspiration.

For me, in order to conjure up creative ideas and repel mind block, I need to surround myself with things that inspire me and keep me motivated to go further. By staying inspired, it makes me ask ‘what if” when developing ideas. By staying motivated, I don’t want to stop developing those ideas.

I’m lucky enough to work in a place speckled with so many interesting people with all different backgrounds, so I wanted to share with you what motivates and inspires them. Read below to find out what keeps some of the ChappellRoberts team going:

MARIE, Graphic Designer

What motivates you to work harder?
Seeing. Seeing other people apply themselves and working hard to create a name for themselves, for something they 100% believe in. And seeing things that aren’t quite right in the world, that could use a helping hand to right those wrongs (pollution, over-fishing, recycling, etc.).

What inspires you?
My 9 to 6 job: fresh ideas just about explode out of ChappellRoberts; being able to collaborate and communicate with my peers each day is like an injection of creativity. Leaving my 9 to 6 job: Plucking myself out of my comfort zone and daily grind to find weird and wonderful things allows me to look at things with a fresh perspective.

RICK, Senior Copy Writer

What motivates you to work harder?
Reminding myself how hard my mom has worked her whole life, and how lucky I am to make a living being creative. Thinking of names like Jeff Goodby, David Droga and Eric Silver while asking myself if my ideas are good enough. But mostly, telling myself to suck it up and gut it out – because it’s my job.

What inspires you?
The thick, strong pot of French Roast that kicks off each and every morning.

CHARLIE, Senior Digital Art Director

What motivates you to work harder?
Deadlines before holiday weekends. Just kidding. But not really. But seriously: When I see one of our clients get excited about an idea we’ve created and become emotionally invested in that idea with us, it becomes effortless to work hard and go 110%. When I feel like everyone is all-in on idea together, there’s really no limit to the energy I’m willing to put forward.

What inspires you?
When I see one of our clients truly embrace and own a brand we’ve helped them build. When every employee from the CEO down is living, breathing and rallying behind an idea, and even coming to us with their own ideas about how to build upon that idea – that’s really inspiring.

KAT, Assistant Account Executive

What motivates you to work harder?
Results for my clients. It’s the most satisfying feeling to work on a strategy for a client, execute that strategy, and see it achieve positive results for them.

What inspires you?
Collaboration. I love being able to work with my colleagues that are in a different department than I am. There’s something truly inspirational about collaborating with someone who brings fresh ideas to the table – ideas that I wouldn’t have otherwise come up with. It’s like the saying goes, “two heads are better than one.”

LAURA, Account Executive & Social Media Lead

What motivates you to work harder?
Encouragement. Positivity makes me want to work harder. I’m grateful to work with a team that breeds reinforcement vs. competition. It makes you want to go the extra mile.

What inspires you?
New environments. Anything that separates me momentarily from what I am working on. If it is a Conversation Calendar™ for a social client, I want to break away and watch something funny. If it is a detailed strategy document, I want to break outside and run.

SARAH, Principal/Creative Services

What motivates you to work harder?
A challenge. The pursuit of a creative solution is exhilarating. Solving problems with ideas is the ultimate reward.

What inspires you?
The creative process. Creativity is a magical thing. I thrive on being involved in ideation and watching a small idea become something big that creates change.
