For those unfamiliar with the global color authority’s Color of the Year selections, each pick represents every year’s global design trends and a snapshot of our social climate since 2000. This color is a welcomed, bold choice after last year’s softball picks, yes multiple colors, Rose Quartz and Serenity.

For Pantone, 2018’s rich purple shade is reminiscent of the “mysteries of the cosmos.” Even NASA pointed out that it takes pictures of space in ultraviolet in a response to Pantone’s tweet. It’s a color that symbolizes creative exploration and innovation. Limitless potential. Thoughtfulness.

Pantone mentions the affinity for purple held by artists who left a unique mark on the music industry, artists that were ahead of their time – Prince, David Bowie and Jimi Hendrix.

And Ultra Violet doesn’t just look generically futuristic. It’s a color for our future.
